SILVERSTONE RACE REPORT
Posted: 06/04/2010
A small but committed entry rolled out at Silverstone for the first two rounds of the 2010 SPEED Series and put on two thrilling races which saw podium positions changing on the very last corner, winners from the back-of-the-grid, spills, thrills and several new faces in the SPEED paddock.
Qualifying
Qualifying was run under damp conditions at a cold Silverstone and tested both new and experienced drivers to the limits. There were seven new SPEED driver pairings on track but it was the experienced front-runners from the 2009 season, Simon Dolan and Sam Hancock (JOTA Ligier JS49), who took the pole position with a blistering lap over 2 seconds faster than the second-placed Ligier of newcomers Jody Firth and Warren Hughes (Team WFR). The Norma of Simon Phillips and Silverstone-expert Chris Ward was third, another 2 seconds back but with conditions in the afternoon’s race set to be wet, qualifying form was no guarantee of success.
The grid featured new faces and new machines. Rookie Mohsin Rashid and Brazilian ace Adriano Medeiros put in a great performance to claim fourth spot on the grid in the newly former Accurate Racing’s maiden outing. 2010 Series top driver, Rob Garofall and new driving partner, Barry Gates (RLR Msport) sat in fifth with the Woodcock Brothers, Garry and Michael in 6th ahead of Belgian racer Christophe Burrick and veteran charger, John Grant (RLR Msport). Ian Simmonds & Phil Hall in the second Accurate Racing car suffered a number of setbacks over the weekend; they qualified 8th.
SPEED has introduced a new bike-engined ‘Class C’ category for 2010 and the invitation was taken up by Gary Ramsdale and Shaun Mellors in their AEL Electrical Sourcing Radical SR3. The team is a welcome addition to the paddock and settled into the scene admirably. Having not driven the challenging Silverstone GP circuit before, they adapted to the conditions and on-track company well to qualify 9th just over a second behind the Ligier of Simmonds/Hall and are set to be joined by greater numbers in Class C from the next round at Brands Hatch onwards. Gary Kane and Tom Ashton were also showing strong in their Radical PR6; despite some teething problems they would put on a very strong display despite starting from the back row.
Race 1
Expectations were high for a competitive contest with a number of highly experienced drivers on the grid. On a wet but drying track the grid took to the track with Dolan, fresh from a recent win with Hancock in France, confident of a strong race. He was passed early by the super quick Hughes but was putting in a strong drive until a rare error after just 5 laps saw him drift wide and run off the track, dislodging an oil pipe that triggered an engine safety mechanism which shut the engine down and out the 47 car out of the race. This was a huge disappointment for drivers and team and robbed the race of a great fight between Le Mans racers Hughes and Hancock. Fortunately the damage was not serious and the car was out in Race 2 where they had better fortunes.
That left Hughes unchallenged for the large part of the race and he opened up a sizeable advantage before handing over to the affable Jody Firth, who maintained strong lap times to bring the car home over a lap ahead of the second placed finisher.
Behind Firth, the real excitement was the duel between the Woodcock Brothers and the sole Norma of Phillips/Ward. The Ligier drivers had progressed up to second place early in the race, a position they held throughout the pit stops but, when Phillips handed the car over to Ward, Silverstone’s chief instructor made up ground hand over fist. With just a few laps to go he was hauling the Ligier in until, unbelievably, after 90 minutes of racing and with just one corner to go, he made it past to finish one tenth of a second ahead in second place.
Tom Ashton put on a real impressive drive in the PR6; having taken over from Gary Kane in a respectable 5th place after 21 laps, he posted superb lap times to secure a fourth placed finish with a best lap that was just under a second slower than the Hughes/Firth car. The PR^ had been duelling with the Ligier of Gates/Garofall for a long section of the race but Gates was forced to retire when the electrics died on the car through a faulty alternator.
Rashid and Medeiros suffered a late puncture that damaged some suspension parts but the pairing made a strong showing in just their first SPEED race – the first race that Rashid has ever taken part in – finishing 5th ahead of the Burrick/Grant car and ahead of the AEL Radical and the Simmonds/Hall machine which had been sidelined for a period early on with a loss of brake fluid. The team got the car out again but the damage had been done and they finished 8th on the road.
The win by the Team WFR drivers was an impressive achievement in their first SPEED outing. They were driving the IF Motorsport prepared Ligier JS49 but are entered from the Brands Hatch event in the brand new WFR chassis designed specifically for the SPEED CN challenge. The commitment from the experienced outfit to the series is a real positive step for SPEED and with 3 chassis set to be on track before the halfway point of the season, WFR seems determined to shake-up the CN sports car racing fraternity.
Race 2
The grid for race 2 was set by the results from race 1 which put the hard-chargers Simon Dolan and Rob Garofall on the back row with Firth/Hughes on pole beside the Norma. The early start on the Saturday morning saw the race shortened by 15 minutes to a 75 minute event and meant drivers had to get on with their job in quick fashion.
Garofall made an immediate impression, up to fourth by the end of the first lap and second behind runaway leader Hughes by lap 7. Dolan was also on a charge, passing 4 cars on lap 1 and running a solid third by lap 21 just before the handover to Hancock.
Hughes looked unassailable out front until lap 26 when the car flew into the pits with the rear wing hanging off following a failure of the brace holding it on. With the drivers switching at that point, the car sat in the pit for several laps whilst the team repaired the car, returning to the track in fifth. This saw Garofall go into the lead having put in a stint markedly longer than any other driver out there. Garofall had reported to the team that the brake pedal was going long during his drive and Barry Gates bravely took on the challenge but, just a lap into his stint the brakes finally failed and he ran out of road and out of the race with a damaged car embedded in the gravel. It was a disappointing weekend for the RLR #1 car but Gates and Garofall suffered similar set-backs in their respective teams last season and both drivers bounced back with race wins. They are expected to be on the top spot of the podium in 2010.
Their demise and the technical woes of the WFR team elevated Hancock and the Woodcock Bros car into first and second respectively. The JOTA prepared car had yet to win in SPEED despite leading a number of races in 2009 and the team was nervously counting down the laps. The Woodcock Bros team was also hoping that they could hold onto their second place this time but with the WFR car fast catching them up, their fears were realised with just 4 laps remaining as Jody Firth went past into second.
Hancock hung onto the finish and a delighted Team JOTA celebrated a good win and a dramatic reversal of fortune from the previous day. Gary Kane brought the PR6 home 4th ahead of the Norma with the Grant/Burrick car 6th despite a drive-through penalty for changing driver early. Rashid/Medeiros were 7th, ahead of the sister car of Simmonds/Hall by two laps. The Gates/Garofall car was 8th with the AEL Electronics Sourcing Radical of Mellors and Ramsdale 10th following a spirited drive.
The SPEED Series moves on to Brands Hatch at the end of May now where the CN cars will contest a 3 hour endure with Class C slugging it out over the first 90 minutes.
